Pleasant Stoops of Southern Ohio

Pleasant Stoops was born 1832-1835 in Clinton County, Ohio.1,2,3 Ohio birth (and death) records do not begin until 1867 although a few counties have them for 1856-1857.

In the 1850 United States census, Pleasant is residing in Madison Township, Highland County, Ohio in the “Simbrew” [Simbro] household.4

Adam Simbrew - age 30, male, farmer, born Ohio
Drusilla Simbrew – age 30, female, born Ohio
James W. Simbrew – age 7, male, born Ohio
John L. Simbrew – age 6, male, born Ohio
Pleasant Stoops – age 18, male, farmer, born Ohio

Pleasant married Hannah Ferry 12 January 1854 in Highland County, Ohio.5, 6

In the 1860 United States census, Pleasant “Sloop” [Stoops] and his family are enumerated in Green Township, Fayette County, Ohio.7

Pleasant Sloop – age 28, male, laborer, $250 in real property, $100 in personal property, born
     Ohio, cannot read and write
H.M. – age, 22, female, born Ohio, cannot read and write
     J.W. – age 4, born Ohio
Lafayette – age 3, male, born Ohio
     D.H. – age 1, male, born Ohio

Pleasant enlisted in the Civil War on 24 October 1861 at Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio, for a term of 3 years. At the time of his enlistment, he was 26 years of age and was a farmer. His complexion was ruddy, and he was 5’6” tall. He had blue eyes and brown hair.8

He served as a private in Company F, 1st Battalion, 18th United States Infantry. On 18 February 1862, he was left at the hospital in Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky where he died of phthisis pulmonalis (tuberculosis) on 27 April 1862.9,10 He is buried in the Lebanon National Cemetery, Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky, grave number 177.11,12,13

On 16 March 1864 in Highland County, Ohio, Lewis W. Baldwin was appointed guardian of the minor children and representatives of Pleasant Stoops, deceased. The children were Lafayette, aged 8 years on or about 5 October 1864, David H., aged 5 years on or about 1 January 1864, and Pleasant, aged 2 years on or about 25 March 1864.14

The dates of birth for the children of Pleasant and Hannah were noted in the Civil War pension file. Lafayette Stoops was born 5 October 1856.15,16,17 David Henry Stoops was born 1 January 1859.18,19,20 Pleasant Stoops was born 26 May 1862.21,22 I need to view the original guardianship file to see if Pleasant was born on the 25th or 26th of May since there is a discrepancy.

Pleasant’s widow Hannah married George A. Leaverton 13 January 1864 in Highland County, Ohio.23,24

An entry in a Shelby County, Ohio, deed book, notes that Lewis W. Baldwin, guardian of the Stoops children, filed a petition in Shelby County Court of Common Pleas against Mark Galimore, Samuel Stoops, Sarah Stoops, George “Leverton” [Leaverton], and Hannah “Leverton” [Leaverton].25 Were Samuel Stoops and Sarah Stoops the parents of Pleasant? I have ordered a copy of the common pleas petition from Shelby County which I hope will provide more information about the family.

Who was the 4-year-old male with the initials J. W. that was enumerated with the family in the 1860 U.S. census? Was he another son that may have died before the death of Pleasant or was he a relative or family friend? A burial record for him was not located for him in Fayette or Highland counties, Ohio.26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33

Hannah died 20 December 1915 in Highland County, Ohio.34,35 I have yet to locate an obituary for her. If there is one, it may list her children.

My Stoops Connection

My 3rd great-grandmother was Elizabeth (Betsey) Stoops. She was the daughter of Philip and Ann(e) McCormick Stoops.

Elizabeth married her 1st cousin Benjamin Campbell, son of Abraham and Elizabeth (McCormick) Campbell in Highland County, Ohio, 11 March 1819. Unfortunately, the original Highland County marriage books from 1816-1820 are blank and the marriage returns were lost.1

Based on the marriage date for Benjamin and Elizabeth as well as tax records of Rockbridge County, Virginia,  the Campbell and Stoops families arrived in southwestern Ohio between 1815 and 1819.3,4

In the 1820 Federal census, Philip Stoops and Abraham Campbell are enumerated in Highland County and Benjamin Campbell is in Adams County.5,6,7

In 2011, I discovered the Guild of One-Name Studies (https://one-name.org) and registered the Stoops name. I began researching Stoops individuals in Highland County, and then moved onto other counties in Ohio. I have now expanded my study to several states as well as a few countries.
